Private Frederick William Graham

 

Frederick William Graham was born on 13 June 1896 at Corcreevy, Donhaghmore, County Down, the second of seven children of steward (later farmer) Thomas Graham and his wife Rosanna (nee Carleton). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at Carrickalwy, Ashfield, County Cavan, with his parents, siblings and a grandmother, and working on the family farm.

Graham enlisted in the North Irish Horse on 14 March 1914 (No.930). He embarked for France with A Squadron on 17 August 1914, seeing action on the retreat from Mons.

After a fortnight, however, he fell ill and was evacuated to England. He was diagnosed to be suffering from rheumatic fever and on 3 January 1915 was discharged from the army as being no longer physically fit for war service (paragraph 392 xvi, King's Regulations). He received a disability pension until February 1923.
